Overview

This unique degree, the only offered globally under this structure, is addressed both to engineers either with Polytechnic studies (i.e., Naval Architects, Marine and Mechanical engineers, etc), and to graduates from Merchant Marine Academies having basic sea experience (i.e., being certified as competent Chief & 2nd Engineers, but also Masters & Chief Officers), planning their career for next employment in the Technical and Marine Departments of reputable Shipping Companies. (based in Greece and abroad).

All video-based modules are analyzed in series of practical lectures, delivered by renowned Superintendents , and supplemented by cutting edge electronic books and handouts, containing: different check-lists, standard forms, guidances for daily work in the shipping companies, together with very explanatory photos and examples / training cases from series of new-building projects, plus dry-dockings / repairs / conversions of different types and sizes of existing merchant vessels (completed in numerous far-eastern and European shipyards).

Curriculum

The programme is designed to respond directly to the real needs of the maritime industry, and to equip graduates with the skills needed today and, in the future, especially in view of the rapid technological development and disruption in the sector and the forthcoming “4th Propulsion Revolution”. It is academically challenging and professionally oriented.
Several designated modules have been established that enable students to pursue clearly defined marine engineering management areas. In this way, it is envisaged that students will be able to specialise in the areas of their interest.

The programme of studies combines a thorough understanding of the theoretical concepts of marine engineering, along with case studies and practical subjects. The modules offered cover the entire range of the main generic marine engineering management areas and functions and put particular focus on decision making.

Postgraduate Certificate in Marine Engineering Management – 60 credits
Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Engineering Management – 120 credits

FINAL AWARD

A Degree in MSc Marine Engineering Management – 180 credits

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

In order to be considered for admission in the Online MSc Marine Engineering Management programme, it is essential that applicants fulfil the following:

Entry Requirements

Applicants can be admitted to the course if they possess a second-class honours degree from a UK University, or a Ptychion of 6.0 and above from an AEI University or a Ptychion of 7.0 and above from a former TEI University, or a Bachelor from an American University with GPA 2.75 and above or a degree from a Merchant Marine Academy or equivalent qualification from a recognised higher education institution (accredited University, College).

Non-Standard Applications

Applicants for the course will normally be expected to meet all entry requirements of the programme. When an applicant narrowly fails to meet the programme’s entry requirements, they may still be considered for a conditional admission as non-standard applications.

We will also consider mature applicants without a first degree as non-standard applications, as long as they possess:

  • the highest-grade certificate of competency (CoC) for unrestricted service as master mariner or chief engineer, or equivalent maritime qualifications
    and
  • substantial relevant professional experience
  • competence in English language, demonstrated by an internationally recognised standard test (see the full English language requirements below)
  • computer competence (at least the ability to use Microsoft Office)

Applicants can sit through BCA’s online English test. See a sample test here. There is no need for a test if you possess one of the following:

  • IELTS: a minimum score of 6.0 (with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component of the test)
  • Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE): Pass and above
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): Pass and above
  • Cambridge English: First (FCE): Grade C and above
  • Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE): P( Pass) and above
  • Pearson Academic (PTE): 53 (with a minimum score of 51 in each component of the test)
  • BCA IELTS Placement Test: a minimum score of 6.0 (with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component of the test)

Other English language qualifications may be considered.

Working Experience:
Relevant experience may be considered accordingly (3 years of experience at managerial level in a shipping or shipping related company is normally required).
