The module offers an introduction to shipping law and the key legal elements to be encountered. Students will have the opportunity to get familiar with the shipping law and practice through both theory as well as case-study examples. They will learn the core laws that govern the marine affairs, the basic shipping conventions, the legal risks and implications of a casualty and what insurance products are available to counter these risks, i.e., essential knowledge both for preventions as well as handling/mitigation purposes.

LLM from Cardiff Law Scholl in Marine Legal Affairs
Professor Spyros Theodoropoulos holds a BA from The University of Piraeus in Shipping Economics and an LLM from Cardiff Law Scholl in Marine Legal Affairs. Since 2000, he has worked in various senior managerial and counsel positions within shipmanagement and chartering companies from Greece, Dubai and the USA. Through his long and active involvement in the Shipping industry, he acquired extensive experience in maritime legal affairs such as regulations, contract formation, dispute resolution, liabilities in tort, environmental issues etc. both from their legal perspective as well as the everyday/practical aspect. Some of the companies that Professor Theodoropoulos has worked over the years include GMS Dubai, Liquimar, Newport and Guardian Navigation.

At the end of the module the learner will be able to:
Demonstrate a systematic knowledge and understanding of the underlying legal issues associated with shipping operation and advise other professionals of the best course of action for each incident.
Analyse available remedies, relieves, limitations and regulations that are available and can prove of assistance.
Evaluate the terms of the most frequently used contracts (charter parties, sale and purchase etc.)
Devise and sustain arguments in relation to pollution regulations and limitations of liability regimes.
Apply methods and techniques to review insurance policies and evaluate the type of cover in connection with each marine risk.
ASSESSMENT STRATEGY
Based on the Programme Specification, students are formally assessed through the submission of coursework. The forms of coursework depend on the characteristics of each module and may include the following types of assessments: case study, essay, report, dissertation, market analysis, project output, valuation, etc.
In addition each module incorporates multiple self-assessment tests. Self-assessment tests are not part of the formal assessment but completion is strongly encouraged as students will be able to monitor and evaluate their learning process and identify areas requiring improvement.
At the end of the module the learner will be able to:
