The module provides an insight to charter party types and clauses. The relevant chartering procedures are effectively presented and students have the possibility to apply such knowledge in a simulated environment. In particular the simulated process includes market research, offers, counteroffers, presentations and misrepresentations, agreement on subjects, recap.
Negotiation techniques and procedures and voyage estimation is thoroughly addressed. The main clauses of charter parties are examined in a comparative style in order to enhance the understanding of the consequences of different wording. Furthermore a holistic approach to charter party is adopted focusing on the evaluation and comparison of charter parties based on total revenue. To this end a thorough examination of laytime calculation is undertaken.

Mr. Panagis Magoulas holds an MSc in Maritime Studies and International Transport from University of Wales, Cardiff College (1998), and a BSc in Business Administration from State University of New York, New Paltz College (1994) as well an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from State University of New York, Empire State College (1992).
Since 1999 he has been working as a full time Chartering broker in Doric Shipbrokers S.A. in Athens. His main core of business is dry cargo chartering of handy up to supra size ships. He is a member of The Baltic Exchange in London since 2006 and a panelist for the Baltic Handysize Index (BHSI).
He has attended in an Educational Program on Shipping Derivatives and Risk Management, from The Research Centre of Athens University of Economics and Business in 2005.

At the end of the module the learner will be able to:
Critically approach the legal meaning of charter party terms
Understand and critically evaluate Bills of Lading function and the legal issues arising from the application of Hague Visby and Rotterdam rules
Critically analyze particular clauses and terms included in charter parties and bills of lading
ASSESSMENT STRATEGY
Based on the Programme Specification, students are formally assessed through the submission of coursework. The forms of coursework depend on the characteristics of each module and may include the following types of assessments: case study, essay, report, dissertation, market analysis, project output, valuation, etc.
In addition each module incorporates multiple self-assessment tests. Self-assessment tests are not part of the formal assessment but completion is strongly encouraged as students will be able to monitor and evaluate their learning process and identify areas requiring improvement.
At the end of the module the learner will be able to:
Analyse in detail charter market reports and other sources of market information
Effectively undertake a voyage estimation and laytime calculation and analyse its results
Critically interpret and evaluate the procedures relating to charter party drafting and the wording of main clauses of charter parties
Critically evaluate the necessary changes of charter party clauses in order to protect the interests of the owner / charterer
