The module provides students the knowledge on topics regarding the financial policy of shipping companies with emphasis on investment programmes, capital structure, cost of capital and pay out policy.

Furthermore, it focuses on topics such as: leasing, financing expansion, collaterals used in finance, cash flow analysis, syndicated loans, project finance for new ships, financing new ships – commercial funds, financing second – hand vessels and conversions, financial appraisal of new projects, the importance and the role of using foreign currencies. Additionally, it analyses the capital markets, the equity (ipo’s) and debt finance. Furthermore, modern types and methods of financing shipping companies (e.g. Islamic Finance) are discussed and assessed.

Moreover, students acquire deeper understanding in techniques and products used by companies dealing with maritime business sector, so that they can reduce the risk bearing by engaging the maritime business sector such as: derivative products, hedging, mergers and acquisitions of shipping companies.The nature of the risk in shipping industry is also identified and analysed along with the significance of financial risk management including the following: freight rate risk, ships value at risk, bunker price risk, interest rate risk and exchange rate risk.

Meet the Instructor

Mr. Panagis Magoulas holds an MSc in Maritime Studies and International Transport from University of Wales, Cardiff College (1998), and a BSc in Business Administration from State University of New York, New Paltz College (1994) as well an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from State University of New York, Empire State College (1992).
Since 1999 he has been working as a full time Chartering broker in Doric Shipbrokers S.A. in Athens. His main core of business is dry cargo chartering of handy up to supra size ships. He is a member of The Baltic Exchange in London since 2006 and a panelist for the Baltic Handysize Index (BHSI).
He has attended in an Educational Program on Shipping Derivatives and Risk Management, from The Research Centre of Athens University of Economics and Business in 2005.

This Module Aims to:

√ Provide students the chance to realize the dynamic, challenging, highly sophisticated and competitive shipping environment for financial point of view

√ Examine all different ways of investment policies that are followed at different sectors of the shipping industry

√ Describe and analyse the most applicable ways of financing a shipping investment

√ Develop the ability of understanding the different ways of shipping developing strategies during the different stages of the shipping cycle from both the ship-owner’s side and the financial institutions

√ Develop the ability of students to apply financial and accounting tools in order to evaluate the profitability of an investment in the different shipping sectors

√ Enable students to recognize the most suitable way of financing to any special investment from the investor’s and financier’s point of view

√ Provide students the ability to suggest alternative ways of financing, support and present their opinion by various supporting arguments and documentation

√ Examine different ways of financing policies that are followed by different financial institutions of the shipping industry

√ Develop the students’ ability to suggest solutions that can support the most suitable way of financing shipping investments in order to be in accordance with the characteristics of each investor

This Module Aims to:

√ provide, enhance and develop knowledge of the chartering procedures (dry cargo and tanker), taking into consideration all parties involved in the process

√ develop students’ ability to assess the relevant market reports in order to determine and propose the proper chartering strategy for the company

√ develop students’ ability to effectively apply legal knowledge on the charter party drafting and negotiation stage

The forms of coursework depend on the characteristics of each module and may include the following types of assessments: case study, essay, report, dissertation, market analysis, project output, valuation, etc.

In addition each module incorporates multiple self-assessment tests. Self-assessment tests are not part of the formal assessment but completion is strongly encouraged as students will be able to monitor and evaluate their learning process and identify areas requiring improvement.
