Overview

The module starts with the definition and main aspects of strategic planning within Commercial Shipping Management and the necessity of assessing both the External and Internal environment of a Shipping Company. Particular focus is provided in the Management of Resources and the Human Element. Emphasis is placed upon the practical elements of ship operations.

Furthermore, students will analyse the modern shipping management best practices such as Engagement and Resilience, Management of Change and Risk Management. Finally, the module will discuss the importance of performance monitoring and management applied in shipping via a balanced scorecard approach of Safety-Efficiency-Financial Performance.
ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) principles are applied to a shipping business within a management system approach incorporating industry best practices guidelines with a clear emphasis on the Environmental pillar in accordance with IMO 2050 targets.

Meet the Instructor

Mr. Poulovassilis joined Lloyd’s Register of Shipping in 1989 and had a distinguished 25-year career with the leading Classification Society, holding the post of Regional Marine Manager, Europe, Middle East & Africa from 2009 until 2015. For the past five years he has held leading positions for Ship Management and Operating companies, and currently is the Chief Operating Officer of a prominent Greek Shipping Company. He is a highly respected and experienced Senior Executive of the Maritime Industry and is also actively involved in numerous joint industry projects. He holds a BEng and MSc from Imperial College and University College London, respectively.

Based on the Programme Specification, students are formally assessed through the submission of coursework. The forms of coursework depend on the characteristics of each module and may include the following types
of assessments: case study, essay, report, dissertation, market analysis,project output, valuation, etc.

In addition each module incorporates multiple self-assessment tests. Self-assessment tests are not part of the formal assessment but completion is strongly encouraged as students will be able to monitor and evaluate their learning process and identify areas requiring improvement.
